Newbery Consulting VET News – 18th December 2020

Hello and welcome to VET News,

This is our last VET News for 2020. I would like to personally thank all of you for sharing the news journey throughout the year. I receive many lovely emails from subscribers throughout the year highlighting their appreciation for receiving a regular news update. We absolutely love putting it together and will recommence in mid to late January.

I would like to give a special mention to our team here at Newbery Consulting. To Bree, Kate and Jacquie in our RTO Data Cloud client support team, to Dave and Sarah in systems development, to Casey and Jeremy in consulting and finally to Jen, who puts the news together each fortnight and helps me with EVERYTHING ELSE! You are all legends.

To all of our subscribers, wishing you and your family a great Christmas and a safe and prosperous 2021. It looks like there will be a continuation of significant change in the VET sector next year so, we all need to get a break ready to return with energy. I am going to do my best to smash out a Tom Clancy book on the beach at South West Rocks and spend some quality time with my family. I wish you all a safe and restful break.

Merry Christmas,

Joe Newbery

Zero-enrolment Units of Competency and Qualifications

The Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC) has made the decision to delete zero-enrolment units of competency (UoC) and qualifications from the national training system. Following a directive from skills ministers to delete training products that have not had enrolments in the past three years from the national training system, the AISC has agreed 975 UoC and 46 qualifications for immediate deletion.

Industry Reference Committees have been asked to delete these products from the national register by 15 February 2021, including through removing references to these products in training product documentation and ensuring skill sets containing deleted units are also removed. A full list of the UoC and qualifications agreed for deletion is available on the AISC website.

Skills Reform

Recognising the importance of a high quality VET system that works for everyone, Australian governments (both at the national and state and territory level) have agreed to immediately progress reforms in the following key areas:

  • Strengthening the role of industry and employers
  • Improving VET qualifications
  • Raising the quality of training

These reforms are the next step in improving the VET system, continuing the work undertaken through reviews and consultations over the past 18 months.

Managing copyright easily in the digital environment with the Statutory Education Licence

To support providers and make compliance easily manageable, the Statutory Education Licence is available through Copyright Agency. This permits the reasonable use of materials and the sharing of these with students for educational purposes.

Under Australian legislation, digital content is protected by copyright in the same way as hardcopy content. Permission or a licence is usually required to copy and share copyright text and images for educational purposes, regardless of format. As digital content becomes more pervasive, it is important that your RTO ensures that every staff member is aware of their copyright compliance obligations.
