Reviewing evidence of competency as part of the recognition of prior learning process
ASQA is closely monitoring the issue of non-rigorous Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), particularly in sectors such as health, transport, and trades-based qualifications, where inadequate skills and knowledge currency could have significant workplace health and safety implications. ASQA’s monitoring efforts are concentrated on these industries, scrutinizing evidence of compliance with assessment and credit transfer practices. In cases of non-compliance, ASQA is prepared to implement a range of escalating actions, including sanctions.
Key findings from ASQA’s data analysis reveal that some providers have granted RPL qualifications to students lacking the necessary skills and competencies, without appropriate gap training or assessment. This analysis is reinforced by concerns raised by trade licensing bodies regarding the credibility of certain RPL qualifications. Licensing bodies have reported instances where applicants failed to substantiate competency granted through RPL.
